Lecturer and Senior Lecturer/Professor Positions in Jurisprudence

About the role

The Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria is seeking three academic appointments in the Department of Jurisprudence: one Lecturer and two senior positions (Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor). The successful candidates will join a vibrant community of scholars dedicated to socially relevant legal research and teaching.

Key responsibilities

• Teach and coordinate undergraduate and postgraduate modules such as Introduction to Law, Law and Society, Legal Theory, Research Methodology, Law and Political Justice, and Legal History.
• Develop and deliver curriculum that adopts a contextual and transformative approach, emphasizing social justice and critical legal theories.
• Engage in scholarly research, publish in reputable journals, and contribute to the department’s research profile.
• Supervise postgraduate theses and mentor junior staff and students.
• Participate in departmental and faculty committees, contributing to academic governance.

Required profile

• Doctoral degree in Law or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching and research, with a focus on jurisprudence, legal philosophy, or socio‑legal studies.
• Commitment to the values of social justice and academic excellence.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse academic environment.
