Junior Legal and Risk Counsel

About the role

Our client, a leading international logistics company based in Durban, is seeking a Junior Legal and Risk Counsel to support the Head of Legal & Risk. The role involves commercial legal, risk, and insurance duties across contract management, insurance programmes, claims, governance and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Review, negotiate, amend and draft commercial, operational and corporate documents such as Service Level Agreements, Master Service Agreements, MOUs, joint‑venture, acquisition and sale agreements.
• Handle lease, finance and security agreements, including loan agreements, guarantees, suretyships, pledges and cessions.
• Prepare confidentiality, intellectual property and data‑protection documentation, including NDAs and trademark‑related agreements.
• Support internal policy, procedure, trading terms and compliance documentation development.
• Identify legal, commercial and insurance risks in third‑party and customer contract templates and recommend amendments.
• Collate information for disputes and litigation, liaise with external attorneys and stakeholders.
• Manage day‑to‑day contract approval under the Marine Liability Insurance Programme, assess contractual liabilities and coordinate with brokers.
• Draft memos on legislation such as the National Ports Act, maritime conventions, environmental, labour, POPIA, sanctions, anti‑corruption, Companies Act and competition law.
• Stay updated on legislative changes and support policy and procedure updates for compliance and risk management.
• Conduct legal research and prepare draft memoranda for management and business units.
