Intermediate Java Developer – In-Office (Cape Town)

About the role

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Java developer to join a fast‑growing payments FinTech, building high‑performance backend systems processing millions of transactions daily. The role is based in Cape Town and offers a salary of R65‑80K per month.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build robust, scalable Java services and microservices.
• Implement messaging and event‑driven architectures using Kafka or RabbitMQ.
• Ensure resilience, security, auditability and idempotency of payment processing.
• Develop clean, well‑tested code and manage cloud‑native deployment on AWS.
• Collaborate closely with engineers in a high‑trust, high‑collaboration team.

Required profile

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
• 3+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong, hands‑on Java expertise, especially with high‑performance backend systems.
• Proven analytical skills and ability to work in high‑stakes, regulated environments.
• Experience with microservices, distributed systems, and payments engineering.

Required skills

• Core Java (11/17/21), OOP, collections, generics, streams, concurrency, JVM performance tuning.
• Spring Boot, Spring Core/DI, Spring MVC/REST.
• Microservices, REST APIs, resilience, idempotency, fault tolerance.
• Messaging: Kafka, RabbitMQ.
• SQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle) and Redis.
• AWS, Docker, Kubernetes/EKS, CI/CD pipelines.
• Testing frameworks: JUnit, Mockito, integration and API/contract testing.
• Build tools: Maven or Gradle, Git.
