Intermediate Backend Engineer – 5G Telecom

About the role

We are looking for an Intermediate Backend Engineer to join a cutting‑edge 5G telecommunications company in Cape Town. You will work in a small, high‑trust team building the production platform that handles ordering, provisioning, and billing at scale, with AI tools used to accelerate development while maintaining rigorous quality.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and own features across event‑driven microservices from concept to production support.
• Implement core business logic, including orchestration, state machines, and business rules using generated boilerplate where appropriate.
• Leverage AI for scaffolding, refactoring, test generation, code analysis, and SQL drafting, while critically evaluating its output.
• Trace and debug multi‑service flows, handling idempotency, ordering, and failure recovery.
• Write performant SQL, review query plans, and validate AI‑generated queries.
• Integrate with internal contracts, vendor APIs, and legacy/SOAP systems, turning specifications into reliable clients.

Required profile

• 3–5 years of production backend experience with strong fundamentals in data structures, concurrency, system design, networking, databases, and queues.
• Effective, critical use of AI tools – prompt, evaluate, and own the resulting code.
• Ability to work autonomously in a small, collaborative team, giving and receiving feedback constructively.
• Fast learner who reads documentation and asks sharp, relevant questions.

• Java and Spring Boot
• Kafka (event streaming) and gRPC (synchronous communication)
• PostgreSQL and advanced SQL (joins, indexing, query plans)
• Drools and TMF Open APIs
• Microservices architecture with saga coordination
• Model‑driven code generation for boilerplate
