ICU Unit Manager

About the role

The ICU Unit Manager will lead the intensive care unit at Life Knysna Private Hospital, ensuring high‑quality clinical practice, patient safety and efficient resource utilisation. This senior nursing role combines clinical expertise with operational leadership to meet the hospital’s strategic objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide effective clinical leadership and oversee the implementation of nursing care plans.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams to deliver appropriate treatment programmes and achieve desired patient outcomes.
• Ensure staff and student competence, drive professional socialisation and deliver constructive feedback.
• Promote patient and family satisfaction, handle complaints, and conduct quality care rounds and clinical audits.
• Implement national quality initiatives, monitor clinical outcomes and report improvements.
• Identify and mitigate clinical and safety risks, initiating corrective actions as needed.
• Develop and disseminate unit‑specific best practice guidelines and support hospital marketing initiatives.
• Lead people management processes, embody LHC values and sponsor organisational projects.
• Participate in budgeting, manage nursing costs, stock utilisation and equipment maintenance.
• Build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including doctors, patients, families and service providers.

Required profile

• Demonstrated visible leadership aligned with LHC values and nursing strategy.
• Proven ability to manage people‑related processes and drive productivity.
• Strong financial acumen for budgeting, cost control and equipment management.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills with multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
• Experience in quality improvement, risk management and implementation of clinical standards.
