Human Rights Officer (Sustainable Development Advisor)

About the role

The Human Rights Officer (Sustainable Development Advisor) will work within the Regional Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Pretoria (or Bangkok) and report to both the UN Human Rights Regional Representative and the OHCHR Chief of the Sustainable Development Section, Geneva. The role provides policy analysis, advice and technical assistance to integrate human rights into economic and social development policies.

Key responsibilities

• Assist OHCHR at the regional level by analysing and advising on human‑rights‑based economic and social policies and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
• Provide guidance on integrating human rights into State and UN development policies, UN Common Country Analyses and Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks.
• Offer policy advice and technical assistance to strengthen national capacities.
• Review, monitor and evaluate implementation of international human rights instruments and treaty‑body recommendations.
• Prepare human‑rights sections of reports for the General Assembly, Human Rights Council and other UN bodies.
• Coordinate with UN units, field staff, governments, NGOs and international financial institutions to embed human rights and gender dimensions in development programmes.

Required profile

• Demonstrated regional responsibility in human‑rights and development contexts.
• Experience providing policy advice, technical assistance and capacity‑development support.
• Familiarity with international human rights instruments, treaty‑body recommendations and UN development frameworks.
