Heritage Specialist (Built Heritage Consultant)

About the role

AECOM is expanding its team of heritage specialists within its Enterprise Capabilities Environment team, based in Centurion. The role suits an experienced Built Heritage Consultant who can work entirely virtually, with no fieldwork, site visits or on-the-ground environmental measurements. The position is full-time and follows a hybrid model of working from an AECOM office at least three days per week.

Key responsibilities

• Undertake desk-based research to inform heritage assessments and setting assessments
• Prepare or contribute to technical reports such as desk-based assessments, heritage statements, environmental impact assessments and characterisation studies
• Analyse how setting contributes to the significance of a heritage asset and how it may be affected
• Manage budgets and workloads so projects are delivered on time and within budget
• Work independently, owning programmes of work and producing high-quality reports
• Liaise with managers, stakeholders and other consultants, and consult with statutory and non-statutory consultees

Required profile

• Relevant degree and/or post-graduate qualification in heritage or a related subject
• Ability to carry out independent research, assessment and analysis on listed buildings, scheduled monuments and conservation areas, and non-designated heritage
• Confidence in preparing desk-based assessments, heritage statements and statements of significance
• Interest in expanding knowledge of environmental impact assessments and characterisation studies
• Detailed knowledge of UK heritage legislation and policy, and of UK built heritage across periods and building types (desirable but not essential)
• Experience assessing historic buildings and their setting, and writing reports including desk-based assessments and heritage statements
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
