Head Technician – Electrical Engineering Technology

About the role

The University of Johannesburg seeks a Head Technician to lead the laboratory facilities within the Department of Electrical Engineering Technology. This full‑time position supports teaching and research by ensuring that labs are safe, well‑equipped, and aligned with advanced engineering curricula.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and expand all laboratory facilities and open‑lab systems.
• Control stock, procure consumables, and manage inventories of equipment and components.
• Maintain and calibrate test and measurement instruments.
• Report on practical work and provide student support, tutoring, and demi‑training.
• Manage staff, enforce quality control, and ensure laboratory safety for equipment and students.
• Oversee procurement procedures and budgetary expenditures related to lab operations.

Required profile

• NQF Level 7 qualification in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
• Two to three years of relevant technical management experience.
• Proven ability to present to students, teaching staff, and senior management.
• Strong reporting, supervisory, and budgeting skills.
• Experience in planning and managing laboratory resources.
