Head of Legal – Renewable Energy – Johannesburg

About the role

The client is a leading provider of innovative and sustainable energy solutions in South Africa. They are looking for an autonomous Head of Legal to lead legal activities across renewable‑energy and construction projects, advise subsidiaries and manage contractual risk.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review, negotiate and execute a variety of agreements, including Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), EPC/EPCM contracts (JBCC, NEC, FIDIC), O&M agreements, memoranda of understanding and asset sale agreements.
• Set up joint‑venture structures and provide legal support for mergers and acquisitions.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and loan covenants, and oversee debt and equity transaction closings.
• Develop and maintain corporate and commercial policies, legal risk registers and the company contract tracker.
• Lead and grow the internal legal team, coordinate with business development, engineering and executive functions, and represent the group in disputes when required.

Required profile

• Admitted attorney with 6–10 years post‑admission experience, preferably in energy, construction or infrastructure projects.
• Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple legal matters and support subsidiaries.

Required skills

• Contract drafting and negotiation, especially PPAs and EPC/EPCM agreements.
• Familiarity with JBCC, NEC and FIDIC contract frameworks.
• Legal research and compliance management.
• Loan agreement compliance and transaction support.
