Head of Legal – Independent Power Producer Office

About the role

The Head of Legal will lead the legal function of the Independent Power Producer Office (IPPO), a specialised project office that procures new energy generation capacity for South Africa. Reporting to the Head of IPPO, the incumbent will shape the legal architecture, contract frameworks and regulatory compliance for a multi‑billion rand portfolio of renewable and hybrid energy programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Design and oversee legal structures for procurement, contracts and regulatory compliance across renewable energy, battery storage, gas‑to‑power, hybrid and transmission projects.
• Provide robust governance and risk‑mitigation strategies for complex IPP programmes.
• Ensure strict statutory compliance and flawless transactional execution for all technology streams.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to align legal strategy with IPPO’s three core mandates: procurement management, contract monitoring, and professional advisory services.

Required profile

• Proven senior legal leadership experience, preferably within the energy or infrastructure sector.
• Deep understanding of South African energy law, regulatory frameworks and contract law.
• Ability to manage large, multi‑disciplinary legal teams and advise on high‑value transactions.
