Head of Communications SSA

About the role

Uber is seeking a senior communications professional to shape and lead its narrative across Sub‑Saharan Africa (SSA). Based in Johannesburg, you will be the primary communications lead for key markets such as South Africa and Kenya, supporting both mobility and delivery businesses.

Key responsibilities

• Design and execute bold, high‑impact corporate and consumer‑facing communications campaigns that elevate Uber’s brand awareness.
• Act as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders on sensitive issues, delivering time‑critical response strategies.
• Own the news cycle, working daily with beat reporters and balancing proactive and reactive communications.
• Partner with marketing, public policy, legal, and business teams to align messaging and amplify key narratives.
• Provide strategic counsel to senior leadership, positioning them as thought leaders.
• Ensure brand consistency across all external touchpoints.
• Oversee external agencies and vendors to guarantee high‑quality deliverables.
• Represent Uber as a spokesperson in media interviews, press briefings, and public speaking engagements.
• Measure communications performance, analyze outcomes, and refine strategies.

Required profile

• Significant experience in communications within mobility, FMCG, or consumer‑tech sectors.
• Background in globally matrixed organizations and fast‑moving ventures.
• Proficiency in English.
• 7+ years in corporate strategic communications and issues management (preferred).
• Strong media and influencer network.
• Intellectual curiosity and willingness to experiment.
• Ability to build cross‑functional relationships and manage multiple projects in a fast‑paced environment.
