Group Legal Counsel – M&A & Corporate

About the role

The Group Legal Counsel – M&A & Corporate will provide specialist commercial contract drafting and legal support across multiple business units within Aspen, including Mergers & Acquisitions, Treasury, Tax, Digital Technology, Commercial, and others. Reporting to the Group Head of Legal Counsel M&A & Corporate, the role balances group‑wide perspective with focused execution for allocated units.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate complex commercial agreements, including cross‑border contracts, for the assigned business units.
• Conduct due‑diligence investigations and provide legal opinions that align with Aspen’s corporate governance and regulatory framework.
• Maintain legal files, templates, and electronic practice management systems to ensure timely delivery of high‑quality work.
• Collaborate on cross‑functional projects, contribute to precedent development, and meet Group Legal KPIs.

Required profile

• LLB (or equivalent postgraduate law degree) and admission as an Attorney of the Republic of South Africa.
• 5–10 years post‑admission experience in a corporate/commercial legal environment, preferably with exposure to M&A and cross‑border agreements.
• Demonstrated ability to independently draft and vet lengthy, complex legal documents.
• Membership of the Law Society of South Africa and the Corporate Counsel Association of South Africa.
