Group Legal Counsel – M&A and Corporate

About the role

The Group Legal Counsel will support Aspen’s business units by providing specialist commercial contract drafting and focused legal advice across M&A, treasury, tax, digital technology, and other corporate functions. The role requires a proactive approach to ensure compliance with Group Legal protocols while delivering high‑quality legal work on time.

Key responsibilities

• Draft and review complex commercial agreements for multiple business units.
• Deliver legally sound advice and ensure timely completion of projects.
• Maintain electronic legal files, diaries, and templates.
• Contribute to cross‑functional legal projects and develop precedents and templates.
• Meet Group Legal KPIs and adhere to Aspen Values and internal processes.

Required profile

• LLB (or postgraduate law degree) and admission as an Attorney in South Africa.
• 5–10 years post‑admission experience in corporate/commercial legal environments.
• Experience drafting and negotiating lengthy, cross‑border agreements.
• Knowledge of corporate governance, financial concepts, and applicable laws.

Required skills

• Excellent drafting and negotiation skills in English.
• Strong analytical ability and sound business judgment.
• Intermediate to advanced computer literacy, including database management.
• Effective project management and ability to handle multiple priorities under pressure.
