Group Legal Counsel – Intellectual Property

About the role

The Group Legal Counsel – IP will manage Aspen’s global intellectual property portfolio, ensuring timely filing, renewal and enforcement of trademarks, domain names and related rights. The role provides legal and commercial support for IP licensing, transactions, disputes and risk management across the Group.

Key responsibilities

• Research international trademark searches and deliver clear opinions on availability and registration.
• Oversee the global trademark portfolio, handling filing, prosecution, maintenance and renewal.
• Administer domain‑name registrations, renewals, transfers and address objections or disputes.
• Draft, analyse and advise on IP agreements, including inbound and outbound licensing arrangements.
• Support acquisitions and divestments by reviewing IP audits and providing due‑diligence advice.
• Monitor watch notices and digital channels to identify misuse of Aspen IP and recommend enforcement actions.
• Manage contentious trademark matters in line with Aspen and Group Legal policies.
• Track changes in trademark and IP legislation worldwide and advise on risk mitigation.

Required profile

• Legal degree (LLB preferred) and admission as an attorney in South Africa.
• 5–10 years post‑admission experience with a focus on intellectual property, especially trademarks.
• Proven experience managing an international trademark portfolio and handling trademark litigation or opposition.
• Commercial awareness of IP matters, including licensing, acquisitions and divestments.
• Strong analytical, research and written communication skills.
