General Practitioner – International Medical Assistance

About the role

International SOS is seeking qualified General Practitioners to join its Medical Assistance team in Midrand, Johannesburg. The role involves delivering remote medical support, health risk assessments, and coordinating medical evacuations for clients worldwide. Candidates must be willing to travel and demonstrate strong clinical leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Provide front‑line medical advice and treatment guidance to remote sites.
• Validate clinical decisions for medical staff operating in the field.
• Oversee and govern medical evacuation and repatriation processes.
• Conduct risk analyses linking medical conditions to geographical locations.
• Deliver telephonic medical advice to patients, families, employers and other stakeholders.
• Manage open cases to ensure appropriate outcomes and financial compliance.
• Liaise with international medical professionals for assessments of overseas patients.
• Offer pre‑travel and evacuation assistance, including bedside assessments and health information.
• Act as a medical escort on international commercial flights when required.

Required profile

• Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery.
• HPCSA registration for independent practice as a General Practitioner.
• Minimum 5 years post‑community service experience.
• Minimum 5 years private‑sector General Practice experience.
• Previous experience in international medical assistance or remote medical services is advantageous.
• Valid passport; EU/UK passport considered a plus.

Required skills

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
• Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or equivalent.
