General Nurse – ICU

About the role

The General Nurse – ICU provides comprehensive, person‑centred nursing care to critically ill patients at Netcare Greenacres Hospital. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will assess, plan and implement individualized care while acting as a patient advocate.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as a clinical resource, supporting staff in assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting nursing care.
• Coordinate communication between families, health professionals and nursing management to resolve patient‑care issues.
• Deliver advanced nursing interventions in line with SOPs, including initiating and directing emergency (RESUS) treatment.
• Conduct patient and family interviews to gather background information and identify immediate and long‑term needs.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, develop and review nursing care plans, and ensure accurate shift documentation.
• Contribute to policy and procedure development, quality and risk management, and resource allocation.
• Facilitate education and training for nursing staff and students, including emergency procedure drills.
• Support the implementation of digital health technologies such as electronic patient records, e‑scripts and clinical order systems.

Required profile

• Registered Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
• Thorough knowledge of general and specialised nursing theory and practice, particularly in intensive care.
• Strong ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and to act as a patient advocate.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and adherence to Netcare’s values and standards.

Required skills

• Proficiency with electronic patient record systems.
• Experience using e‑scripts and clinical order entry platforms.
• Competence in performing RESUS emergency treatment.
