General Manager – Mechanical, Plant & Fleet Services

About the role

The Municipality seeks a senior leader to oversee mechanical, plant and fleet operations. The role combines strategic planning, operational management and compliance within the infrastructure services directorate.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the overall strategy for fleet management.
• Lead the Mechanical Workshop Department and its maintenance activities.
• Monitor vehicle distribution and usage across the municipality.
• Oversee the fleet and fuel management system.
• Ensure compliance with all legal and statutory requirements.
• Manage the department’s financial budget and reporting.
• Coordinate maintenance functions to ensure asset reliability.

Required profile

• Degree in Transport and Fleet, Mechanical Engineering, Business Management or Public Management.
• Valid Code B/EB driver’s licence.
• Computer literate.
• Eight years of relevant experience, with at least two years at middle‑management level.

Required skills

• Organisational awareness of municipal and local government processes.
• Project management – ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Effective communication – direct handling of issues and stakeholder interaction.
