General Manager - Finance & Operations

About the role

An established and growing manufacturing, installation and shop-fitting company near Edenvale, Johannesburg, is looking for an experienced General Manager - Finance & Operations. This is a senior, hands-on role where you work closely with the directors to improve profitability, streamline operations and strengthen internal systems. The position is full-time, primarily on-site at the factory and offices, with salary negotiable.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee budgeting, cash-flow forecasting, financial reporting and working capital management, and maintain financial controls across accounts, payroll, customer payments, supplier commitments and expenditure.
• Monitor product and project profitability, analyse actual costs against budgets and quotations, and work with external accountants and financial advisers.
• Oversee procurement, stock control, warehousing, manufacturing, installations and after-sales service, keeping production schedules aligned with customer commitments and delivery deadlines.
• Improve operational workflows, quality control and cost management, and resolve bottlenecks that cause delays, rework and material wastage.
• Manage departmental managers, set performance standards and drive the adoption of the company's operational management platform.
• Ensure business systems such as Xero are used effectively, and work with the directors on business planning, risk management and growth.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a senior financial management, general management or combined finance and operations role.
• Previous experience in manufacturing, production, engineering, shop fitting, installations or a similar product-based environment.
• Ability to manage teams, coordinate departments and improve business processes.
• Strong commercial acumen, analytical skills and a practical, hands-on management style.

Required skills

• Budgeting, cash-flow management, management accounts, financial controls and business costing.
• Experience implementing or improving business systems and performance management structures.
• Advantageous: a qualification in Finance, Accounting, Commerce or Business Management; experience with Xero, inventory management, production costing, bills of materials and job profitability; exposure to integrated operational management systems or business process automation.
