General Assistant

About the role

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is looking for a General Assistant to support the safe and efficient operation of the Detonics, Ballistics and Explosives Laboratory (DBEL) within its Landward Sciences Impact Area. Based in Pretoria, the incumbent will provide technical assistance, maintain facilities, prepare equipment and support testing activities while ensuring compliance with all health, safety and explosives regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Support the preparation, setup, execution and close‑out of laboratory testing activities.
• Prepare, maintain and transport test equipment, targets and test stands.
• Carry out basic plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, electrical and mechanical maintenance work.
• Maintain roads, fences, grounds and other site infrastructure to ensure a safe operational environment.
• Conduct routine inspections of facilities, vehicles and equipment and report any defects.
• Assist with test site mobilisation, demobilisation and overall operational readiness.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, tools, consumables and equipment inventory.
• Monitor and report shortages of maintenance materials, tools and equipment.
• Ensure a clean, safe and organised workplace, adhering to all regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• Senior Certificate (Grade 12/Matric) with Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy and Physical Science.
• At least two years of experience in facilities maintenance or a related technical field.
• Ability to perform basic plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, electrical and mechanical tasks.
• Strong attention to safety, compliance and record‑keeping.
