External Communications Manager

About the role

The External Communications Manager will lead Old Mutual’s external communications strategy, shaping media positioning and advocacy programmes to strengthen the Group’s reputation and share of voice across Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute the annual Group External Communications plan to generate earned media visibility and thought‑leadership exposure.
• Shape proactive media positioning that reinforces Old Mutual’s Value Creation story and supports positive evaluation of its financial performance.
• Identify and activate external advocacy partners, expanding the network of credible voices that amplify the Value Creation narrative.
• Monitor media coverage, industry trends and public sentiment to inform reputation management and ensure balanced reporting.
• Create high‑impact content such as opinion pieces, press releases, webinars and LinkedIn thought‑leadership profiles.
• Secure strategic speaker opportunities and manage briefing documents for media interviews, public engagements and industry conferences.
• Provide media training and coaching to spokespeople, ensuring readiness for interviews and public appearances.

Required profile

• Proven experience in external communications, reputation management and media relations.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement comprehensive communications plans.
• Strong track record of producing thought‑leadership content and securing speaking opportunities.
• Experience managing advocacy programmes and external partner networks.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
