Engineering Workshop Manager – Underground Mining

About the role
We are looking for an Engineering Workshop Manager to lead multiple workshops that support underground mining projects. Based in Orkney, North West, the role involves regular travel to operational sites across South Africa and reports directly to the Operations Manager.
Key responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and standardise processes across all engineering workshops.
- Oversee preventative, predictive and breakdown maintenance to maximise fleet availability.
- Manage engineering stores, spare inventories and procurement with OEM suppliers.
- Prepare and control workshop budgets while identifying cost‑saving initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act and conduct safety audits.
- Lead, mentor and develop workshop personnel, allocating resources across projects.
Required profile
- Grade 12 (Matric) and a Section 13 or Section 26D trade certificate (e.g., Millwright, Fitter, Diesel Mechanic).
- 8–10 years post‑trade engineering experience, including 3–5 years in a workshop supervisory role.
- Minimum 3–5 years of underground mining experience.
- Valid driver’s licence, no criminal record and medically fit for underground work.
- Willingness to travel extensively and work extended hours when required.
Required skills
- Experience with underground diamond drilling rigs (LM90/100, CS rigs).
- Proficiency operating underground utility vehicles and LHD machines.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems, compressors and pumps.
- Familiarity with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
- Strong competence in preventative maintenance planning and asset management.
