Engineering Manager

About the role

The Hospital Engineering Manager will lead the engineering department for Life Carstenhof and Carstenview Hospitals, reporting to the Hospital Manager. You will be accountable for the full spectrum of asset care, building maintenance, plant and machinery, infrastructure, energy usage and sustainability within a defined budget.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure continuous performance, improvement and quality management of occupational health and safety in line with OHS Act No.85 of 1993.
• Recruit, assign, direct and evaluate engineering staff; develop competence and conduct performance reviews.
• Oversee land, building and equipment maintenance, including preventive maintenance programmes, job‑card and call‑out systems.
• Manage capital upgrades, energy‑saving and sustainability projects, and identify replacement needs.
• Prepare and control operational and capital budgets, bids, tenders and contracts; negotiate with external service providers.
• Produce reports, approve expenditures and present proposals to hospital and regional management.
• Coordinate surveys, risk assessments and client satisfaction surveys on a regular basis.
• Supervise on‑site contractors, ensuring compliance with conformity declarations, quotations and approval guidelines.

Required profile

• Relevant engineering qualification and extensive experience in hospital or large‑scale facilities management.
• Proven leadership ability to manage multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and compliance.
• Demonstrated capability in budgeting, financial control and contract negotiation.
• Excellent analytical and decision‑making skills with a focus on risk management.
