Embedded C Programmer

About the role

This role focuses on developing embedded C applications that support connected, intelligent transport solutions. It is based in Cape Town and centres on microcontroller‑based systems used within traffic infrastructure, linking field hardware to cloud platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Develop embedded applications in C for microcontroller‑based devices.
• Create and maintain design documentation and feature specifications.
• Analyse requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.
• Debug and resolve code‑related issues on embedded targets.
• Update, refactor and optimise existing codebases for performance and maintainability.
• Interpret technical documentation and datasheets to ensure correct hardware integration.
• Collaborate with colleagues across South Africa, the US and India.
• Manage multiple development tasks concurrently while meeting agreed timelines.

Required profile

• Relevant software or engineering qualification.
• Strong programming experience in C.
• Practical experience with microcontroller programming (bare‑metal or RTOS‑based).
• Solid understanding of core software engineering principles.
• Ability to debug embedded systems and work systematically through complex issues.
• Strong sense of ownership and accountability.
• Effective problem‑solving skills and structured troubleshooting approach.
• Clear, professional communication for distributed teams.

Required skills

• C programming.
• Microcontroller programming (bare‑metal, RTOS).
• Linux programming for embedded or systems‑level development.
• Git/GitHub version control.
• Reading and interpreting electronic component datasheets.
• Hardware bring‑up (schematics, interfaces, basic hardware).
