About the role

The South African Historical Journal is seeking scholars to join its editorial collective for a five‑year term. This unpaid role involves contributing to the journal’s development, overseeing content production, and promoting African historical scholarship.

Key responsibilities

Commission and oversee the timely production of journal issues, including special issues in your area of expertise.
Solicit, evaluate, and manage article manuscripts through the peer‑review and production processes.
Attend bi‑annual online town‑hall meetings and regular editorial board meetings.
Promote the journal within academic networks and contribute to editorial policy development.
Ensure compliance with the journal’s code of publishing ethics.

Required profile

Dedicated and enthusiastic scholars holding a PhD in African history or a related discipline.
Strong organisational abilities and capacity to meet deadlines.
Institutional support from a university or research centre for the five‑year tenure.
Experience in collaborative academic work and editorial or administrative tasks.
