Drill and Blast Engineer

About the role

South Deep is seeking a Drill & Blast Engineer to develop optimal drill and blast plans for underground ore liberation, ensuring safety, efficiency and compliance with waste dilution and fragmentation tolerances.

Key responsibilities

• Design and optimise drill and blast patterns for underground longhole stoping operations.
• Apply best practices, cutting‑edge technology and software (e.g., Deswik, blast pattern design tools) to support operational and strategic mine plans.
• Conduct regular safety, work‑practice and operational inspections.
• Lead interventions to promote a Zero‑Harm culture and ensure compliance with SHE legislation and policies.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to diagnose issues, implement Lean Six Sigma solutions and manage projects.

Required profile

• Grade 12 or equivalent, with a Degree or National Diploma in Mining Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum five (5) years of underground bulk mechanised mining experience, preferably in longhole stoping or similar bulk production drilling and charge‑up operations.
• Valid Blasting Ticket for Scheduled Mines and Rock Breaker’s certificate.
• Medically fit for underground work, including heat tolerance screening.
• Demonstrated safety and environmental leadership, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and proven people‑leadership capability.

Required skills

• Drill & blast design and optimisation.
• Use of Blast Pattern Design and Stope Reconciliation software.
• Proficiency with Deswik mining planning packages.
• Understanding of drill rigs, charge units and their operation.
• Lean Six Sigma problem‑solving and decision‑making tools.
• Project management and technology implementation.
