Director of Networks – Tshwane (Pretoria)

About the role

The Director: Networks will lead the planning, implementation and day‑to‑day operation of the organisation’s IT network infrastructure, ensuring stability, availability, security and integrity. The role involves managing external service providers, overseeing network projects and reporting, and coaching a team within the Chief Directorate.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and direct the coordination and implementation of WAN and LAN operations.
• Manage delivery of critical support services for day‑to‑day IT network operation, data communications and telecommunications.
• Oversee design, availability and capacity of communication infrastructure across the department.
• Develop and enforce policies, standards and guidelines to safeguard network assets.
• Maintain relationships with service providers and ensure performance of external contracts.
• Produce regular reports on network infrastructure performance and project status.
• Guide the implementation of security measures in collaboration with IS Security.

Required profile

• Undergraduate qualification (NQF level 7) in IT, Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience at middle or senior management level in an IT environment.
• Extensive experience managing networks for at least 300 users, including LAN and WAN environments.
• Strong knowledge of public service legislative frameworks and GITO requirements.
• Willingness to travel and work extended hours, with a valid driver’s licence preferred.

Required skills

• LAN and WAN network design and implementation.
• Project management and optimisation of network projects.
• Professional certifications such as CCNA or CCNP (advantageous).
• Understanding of Minimum Information Security Standards (MISS) and ISO 17799.
• Experience with network performance monitoring and capacity planning.
