Director-General, Military Veterans (Fixed‑term)

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans seeks a senior leader to serve as Director‑General, overseeing policy implementation, financial management and service delivery for military veterans across South Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the Accounting Officer and Head of Department, ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.
• Lead the development, implementation and monitoring of strategic, annual performance and operational plans.
• Oversee financial systems, internal controls, supply‑chain management and audit outcomes.
• Provide strategic direction for veteran socio‑economic support services, housing, pension, compensation and healthcare programmes.
• Manage stakeholder relationships, empowerment programmes and skills‑development initiatives.

Required profile

• Senior Certificate and a postgraduate qualification (NQF level 8) in Public Administration, Public Management or Social Services, recognised by SAQA.
• At least 10 years of senior management experience, including executive leadership and monitoring‑and‑evaluation of government policies.
• In‑depth knowledge of the Constitution, Public Service Act, PFMA, National Development Plan and related legislation.
• Proven ability in financial management, project and programme management, change management and strategic planning.
• Strong interpersonal attributes such as integrity, confidentiality, fairness and commitment.
