Director-General – Military Veterans (Fixed-Term)

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans is seeking a senior leader to serve as Director-General. This fixed‑term five‑year appointment will provide strategic direction and overall management of the department’s programmes and services for military veterans.

Key responsibilities

• Act as Accounting Officer and Head of Department, ensuring compliance with all legislative and regulatory prescripts.
• Oversee development and maintenance of financial systems, internal controls, and supply‑chain management.
• Monitor adherence to government policies, manage MoUs and service‑level agreements, and report performance to oversight bodies.
• Provide strategic leadership for socio‑economic support, housing, pension, compensation, healthcare and empowerment programmes for veterans.
• Lead the planning, implementation and monitoring of strategic, annual performance and operational plans.
• Manage risk, audit findings and ensure clean audit outcomes.

Required profile

• Senior Certificate and an appropriate postgraduate qualification (NQF level 8) in Public Administration, Public Management or Social Services.
• At least ten years of senior management experience, including executive management and policy monitoring.
• In‑depth knowledge of the Constitution, Public Service Act, PFMA, National Development Plan and related government legislation.
• Proven people‑management, financial management, project and programme management and change‑management capabilities.
• Personal attributes such as integrity, confidentiality, fairness, credibility and compassion.

What we offer

• All‑inclusive remuneration package ranging from R2 259 984 to R2 545 854 per annum (Level 16).
• Fixed‑term five‑year contract with pension fund contribution and a non‑pensionable allowance equal to 10 % of the package.
