Director-General, Department of Military Veterans

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans is seeking a senior executive to provide strategic leadership and overall accountability for delivering services to South Africa's military veterans. The Director-General will act as the Accounting Officer, overseeing policy development, service delivery, and stakeholder engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and implementation of policies, procedures and programmes that support the socio‑economic welfare of military veterans.
• Provide strategic guidance across finance, risk, internal audit, communications, corporate support and special projects.
• Interpret political direction, ensure alignment with departmental vision and monitor performance against the department’s plans.
• Manage consultative commitments and serve as the primary interface between Parliament, elected officials and the department.

Required profile

• Undergraduate (NQF Level 7) and postgraduate (NQF Level 8) qualifications in Public Administration, Public Management or a related field recognised by SAQA.
• Eight to ten years of senior managerial experience, including at least three years in a state organ, with proven executive management and leadership capability.
• Strong knowledge of strategic leadership, government policies, legislation interpretation and business ethics.
• Demonstrated personal attributes such as integrity, confidentiality, fairness and commitment.
