Diesel Mechanic

About the role

Afrirent Auto is looking for a Diesel Mechanic to diagnose, service and repair diesel-powered vehicles and machines such as trucks and trailers in Afrirent's Auto fleet. The role provides high-quality maintenance to minimise downtime and accident risks, supports Afrirent's contractual obligations to its clients and meets stakeholder expectations. It also ensures compliance with general housekeeping and occupational health and safety (OHS) in the workshop.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out fault finding and investigations to diagnose repairs and maintenance needs on fleet vehicles
• Analyse causes of faults, request quotes and submit them for pre-approval
• Service and repair vehicles accurately and to the highest quality
• Respond to breakdowns and carry out onsite repairs when necessary
• Implement safety standard operating procedures at all times
• Deal with Certificate of Fitness (COF) defects on vehicles
• Run brake tests after brake overhauls and follow strict inspection checklists while keeping accurate paperwork
• Recommend preventative maintenance proactively and keep parts, tools and equipment well stocked
• Escalate complex or unresolved repairs to the Workshop Manager
• Maintain hygienic housekeeping and adhere to SHEQ policies, procedures and safety protocols

Required profile

• N3 National Certificate (NQF Level 4) in Diesel Mechanic / Artisan / Trade; non-negotiable
• Code 10 driver's licence and Professional Driving Permit (PDP)
• Own toolbox and relevant tools
• 5 years' experience as a diesel mechanic / technician
• Previous experience with UD290 / 440 / Quan series, Mercedes Axor and Actros
