Deputy Director – Persal Salary Controller (Level 11)

About the role

The Department of Military Veterans seeks a senior professional to manage salary and allowance payments through the PERSAL and BAS systems. This permanent position involves overseeing the entire payroll lifecycle, ensuring compliance with tax regulations and internal policies.

Key responsibilities

• Manage payment of salaries, allowances and oversee validation of all payroll transactions.
• Administer, monitor and audit the PERSAL and BAS systems, including monthly reconciliations and tax submissions to SARS.
• Coordinate training for PERSAL users, maintain user records and facilitate the PERSAL user forum.
• Oversee garnishee orders, pay deductions, and ensure correct implementation of tax and levy calculations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or National Diploma in Finance, Human Resources Management or equivalent.
• Three to five years of experience at an Assistant Director level executing Persal‑related functions.
• Strong knowledge of government finance and HR policies, and ability to interpret legislation.
• Demonstrated integrity, interpersonal skills and commitment to fairness.
