Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions – Specialized Commercial Crime Unit

About the role

The National Prosecuting Authority is seeking a Deputy Director for the Specialized Commercial Crime Unit in Gqeberha. This senior leadership position oversees high‑profile civil and criminal litigation, provides strategic direction, and ensures effective prosecution of complex cases.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the portfolio assigned by the SCCU Regional Head and the Director of Public Prosecutions.
• Lead, train and guide advocates, prosecutors and stakeholders on complex high‑profile matters across all courts.
• Investigate, prepare and prosecute cases, including drafting charge sheets, indictments and other court documents.
• Present the State’s case in court, conduct examinations of witnesses and address sentencing matters.
• Provide legal oversight and guidance on investigation projects and casework.
• Develop strategic plans for the division and align resources to achieve objectives.
• Oversee performance management, development and assessment of staff members.
• Handle representations, complaints and ensure high standards of professional work.

Required profile

• LLB qualification; serving prosecutors may apply with appropriate legal qualifications.
• Minimum ten (10) years post‑qualification experience in civil and/or criminal litigation.
• Demonstrated ability to act independently, professionally, accountably and with credibility.
• Admission as an attorney or advocate is an advantage.
• Strong advocacy and legal drafting abilities.
• Knowledge of civil and criminal procedure and right of appearance under the NPA Act.
• Excellent interpersonal, analytical, presentation and communication skills.
• Computer skills and ability to work extended hours.
• Valid driver’s licence.
