Data Security Specialist (Johannesburg)

About the role

We are seeking a Data Security Specialist based in Johannesburg (3 days per week in office) for a 6‑month contract with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will implement and manage data protection controls, ensure compliance with banking regulations and data privacy requirements, monitor and investigate security incidents, and collaborate with stakeholders to enhance the organisation's data security posture.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and manage data security controls, including Data Loss Prevention (DLP), encryption, and access management solutions.
• Conduct security assessments, vulnerability reviews, and risk analysis.
• Ensure compliance with banking regulations and data privacy requirements.
• Monitor and investigate security incidents and support remediation activities.
• Define and enforce data governance, classification, retention, and protection policies.
• Collaborate with business, infrastructure, and application teams to strengthen the security posture.
• Support audits, regulatory reviews, and security reporting.

Required profile

• Proven experience with data security, DLP, IAM, encryption, and security monitoring.
• Hands‑on experience with SIEM, vulnerability management, and incident response.
• Strong understanding of data governance, risk management, and secure data handling practices.
• Knowledge of banking regulations, data privacy, and compliance frameworks.
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Preferred certifications: CISSP, CISM, CISA, CEH, or equivalent.
