Data Scientist – AI & ML Engineering

About the role

Old Mutual is building the next generation of insurance powered by generative AI and applied machine learning. As a Data Scientist you will turn data and AI concepts into production‑ready solutions that reshape underwriting, pricing, claims and customer engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Build generative AI applications such as LLM‑powered assistants, RAG over enterprise content and workflow‑automation tools.
• Engineer prompts, evaluation pipelines, safety controls and guardrails for AI systems in production.
• Design, develop and deploy machine‑learning pipelines and inference services, including predictive and generative models.
• Apply MLOps practices – CI/CD for ML, feature stores, model registries, automated retraining, monitoring and drift detection.
• Develop statistical and ML models for pricing, risk, claims and customer behaviour and move them to production.
• Optimize inference cost, latency and performance across AI/ML workloads.
• Extract insights from customer, product and operational data to guide business decisions.
• Collaborate in agile squads with actuaries, product owners and tech teams, and contribute to a cloud‑native insurance architecture.

Required profile

• 2+ years of experience in AI/ML engineering, data science, analytics or actuarial environments (3+ years for engineering‑focused roles, 5+ for senior data‑science roles).
• Strong background in Python and SQL with solid software‑engineering fundamentals.
• Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
