Compliance Manager – General/Short-Term Insurance

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Compliance Manager to lead compliance across a General/Short‑Term Insurance environment in Johannesburg’s Northern Suburbs. The role combines strategic advisory work with hands‑on execution, ensuring regulatory risks are identified, addressed and resolved.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the second‑line compliance function, developing the Compliance Risk Management Plan and annual monitoring programme.
• Conduct risk‑based compliance monitoring, thematic reviews and regulatory assessments, providing practical advice to senior management.
• Identify compliance gaps, investigate findings and drive remediation actions, while preparing meaningful reports for Exco and governance committees.
• Support regulatory submissions and engagements with the FSCA and/or Prudential Authority.
• Build strong relationships with business stakeholders, maintaining independence required of a second‑line function.
• Lead, coach and develop compliance team members, fostering continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Matric (Grade 12) and a bachelor’s degree in a related field; professional compliance or risk certification advantageous.
• 6+ years’ experience in compliance/regulatory compliance within General/Short‑Term Insurance.
• Strong knowledge of South African insurance regulation, including FSCA or Prudential Authority requirements.
• Proven experience developing CRMPs, managing compliance monitoring programmes and handling regulatory findings.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare reports for executive committees and influence senior stakeholders.
• Previous experience leading and mentoring compliance professionals.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of FSCA regulations and/or Prudential Authority standards.
• Familiarity with STIA, Insurance Act, Prudential Standards, FAIS and FICA legislation.
• Expertise in risk‑based compliance monitoring and remediation.
• Strong analytical and decision‑making abilities.
