Commercial Underwriter

About the role

Our client is seeking a Commercial Underwriter to assess and manage commercial insurance risks across various short‑term lines, including property, liability, motor and engineering.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse data related to commercial risks and interpret applications, inspection reports and financial statements.
• Make underwriting decisions on acceptance, terms, coverage limits, premiums and conditions, negotiating within delegated authority.
• Manage an assigned portfolio, monitor performance, review for adverse trends and adjust policies on renewal.
• Develop and maintain relationships with brokers, agents and direct clients, providing advice on insurance solutions and policy wording.
• Ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements, documenting decisions in the underwriting system.
• Contribute underwriting insights to product development and stay updated on emerging market risks.
• Collaborate with the claims department to understand loss trends and improve underwriting guidelines.

Required profile

• Matric qualification.
• Commercial Lines Class of Business Regulatory Exam Level 1 NQF 5 in Short‑Term Insurance.
• Minimum of 3 years relevant commercial underwriting experience.
