Commercial Underwriter

About the role

The Operations Department is seeking a Commercial Underwriter to manage a broker portfolio of roughly 500 policies. Reporting to the Commercial Underwriting Manager, the role combines strategic input with day‑to‑day underwriting activities for a range of commercial lines, including agriculture, engineering and hospitality.

Key responsibilities

• Provide proactive, high‑quality client service throughout the underwriting process.
• Underwrite commercial products across multiple lines, ensuring compliance with product requirements and industry trends.
• Translate product specifications into system functionality, defining data capture, validation rules, limits and calculations.
• Maintain and grow a portfolio of approximately 500 commercial policies.
• Collaborate with insurers, brokers and internal teams to resolve underwriting queries.

Required profile

• Matric qualification and FAIS registration (Fit & Proper, no FSCA debarment).
• 3‑5 years of commercial underwriting experience covering lines such as agriculture, engineering and hospitality.
• Strong analytical mindset, attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
• Excellent written and verbal communication in English; Afrikaans is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
• Experience with insurance principles and commercial lines underwriting.
• Familiarity with the Websure system (advantage).
