Clinical Coder – Billing Operations Centre (Cape)

About the role

The Clinical Coder will work within the Billing Operations Centre (BOC) in Cape Town, collaborating with billing teams, clinicians and managed‑care organisations to ensure accurate coding of patient encounters for reimbursement and risk‑management purposes.

Key responsibilities

• Review and audit clinical documentation to assign correct ICD‑10 and CCSA codes.
• Ensure coding reflects patient condition, clinical severity and medical necessity.
• Consider the impact of coding on alternative reimbursement models, DRG, MDC and case‑mix calculations.
• Liaise with patients, treating clinicians and funders to resolve coding queries and escalations.
• Participate in system enhancement and process‑improvement projects.
• Support innovation and best‑practice initiatives related to clinical coding.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of health‑care coding standards (ICD‑10, CCSA).
• Ability to interpret clinical documentation and translate it into accurate codes.
• Attention to detail and commitment to coding accuracy.
• Experience working in a managed‑care or billing environment is advantageous.
