Chief Designer – Flight Procedure & Cartography

About the role

The Chief Designer will lead the Flight Procedure Design and Cartography team, reporting to the Head of Flight Procedure Design and Cartography. The role is responsible for managing, supervising, mentoring and delivering instrument flight procedures, airspace designs and obstacle assessments in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Provide input into budgeting, personnel and training requirements for the PANS‑OPS/Charting section.
• Manage the Flight Procedure Design and Cartography office infrastructure, software and compliance with ICAO SARPs, CARS and CATS.
• Lead the design, development and approval of instrument flight procedures, airspace and obstacle assessments, ensuring regulatory compliance.
• Oversee quality‑assurance processes, training logs, manuals and ISO‑9001:2015 procedures for the section.
• Coordinate with the SACAA, ATM/CNS executives and safety groups on safety assurance, audits and environmental considerations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in administration or equivalent tertiary qualification.
• Minimum 4 years PANS‑OPS design experience and 3 years in an air‑traffic service environment.
• At least 2 years OJTI (On‑Job Training Instructor) experience.
• Completed basic and advanced PANS‑OPS courses and advanced OJTI training.

Required skills

• Proficiency with procedure‑design software, preferably PFDAM.
• Knowledge of ICAO DOC 8168, DOC 9906, DOC 9613 and South African Civil Aviation Regulations (PART 173, PART 177).
• Experience in budgeting, training programme development and ISO‑9001 quality management.
