Building Inspector – Municipal Infrastructure

About the role

The Building Inspector will coordinate monitoring of compliance with the National Building Regulations, SABS Codes of practice and municipal standards. The role involves reviewing plan submissions, issuing compliance notices and preparing investigative reports to ensure safe and lawful construction.

Key responsibilities

• Perform building, drainage and illegal structure inspections across municipal areas.
• Review and approve building plans, conduct preliminary town‑planning checks and attend plan‑approval meetings.
• Prepare and present investigative reports, issue compliance notices and maintain inspection records.
• Collect property information, handle statistics, rates and transfer clearances, and support maintenance planning.

Required profile

• 3–5 years experience in the building industry.
• Relevant National Diploma as stipulated in the National Building Regulations.
• Valid Code EB driver’s licence and eligibility for registration as a Peace Officer.
• Physically fit, able to work overtime and attend meetings after normal office hours.

Required skills

• Knowledge of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act.
• Familiarity with SABS Codes of practice and municipal building‑control functions.
• Computer literacy with MS Office.
• Ability to operate building‑inspection tracking systems.
