Backend Software Engineer

About the role

Primer is looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join its high‑performance engineering team. You will design and build core backend services that power a global payments platform, working remotely with colleagues across Europe and South Africa.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services for complex distributed systems.
• Apply modern development practices such as Behaviour‑Driven Development (BDD) and Test‑Driven Development (TDD).
• Write clean, well‑tested code and create detailed internal documentation.
• Collaborate with product, frontend, and other engineering teams in a product‑driven environment.
• Own key technology decisions, optimise for performance and scalability, and conduct code reviews.

Required profile

• Proven experience coding in Python within modern, complex technical environments.
• Strong understanding of the full development lifecycle – design, development, deployment, and testing.
• Self‑starter who thrives in a fast‑paced, autonomous setting.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Based in Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Romania, or South Africa.
