Audit Committee Member – Social Development Department

About the role

The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development seeks an experienced Audit Committee Member to provide strategic oversight of internal audit functions, risk management and governance processes. The role reports directly to the Head of Department and the MEC, ensuring accountability and compliance across the department.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and review performance and effectiveness of the Internal Audit Function, including approval of audit coverage plans and policies.
• Assess the independence and objectivity of the Auditor-General and the overall audit process, reviewing audit reports for significant transactions.
• Advise on risk, ethics, and compliance management strategies, and evaluate financial and non‑financial performance against service delivery expectations.
• Review the adequacy of internal control, governance systems, and compliance with legal and regulatory provisions, including ICT infrastructure effectiveness.

Required profile

• National Senior Certificate plus a B‑Degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, Community Development, Public Management, Business Management, Law or a related field.
• Minimum five (5) years experience at director level within an organization.
• At least two (2) years serving on an audit committee or similar governance structure.
• Member of a recognised professional body and solid understanding of the PFMA, Treasury Regulations and related public‑sector oversight frameworks.
