Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer – English Language Education

About the role

The Department of Curriculum Studies at Stellenbosch University seeks an Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer to lead English First and Second Language Education on the Stellenbosch campus. The successful candidate will combine teaching excellence with a strong research profile to advance the department’s mission.

Key responsibilities

• Teach English Home Language and First Additional Language modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Develop, evaluate, and refine teaching and learning materials for English language instruction.
• Participate in the design and assessment of practical teaching opportunities.
• Conduct research, publish in peer‑reviewed journals, and present at national and international conferences.
• Supervise and co‑supervise honours, master’s and doctoral students.
• Identify and apply for external research funding.
• Engage in social impact projects and provide services to the university and broader teaching community.
• Contribute to academic administration and leadership within the department and faculty.

Required profile

• Relevant PhD with literature or (applied) linguistics as a core element.
• Teaching qualification recognised for higher education.
• Proven experience teaching English in university settings.
• Experience supervising postgraduate research in language education.
• Strong academic record with international collaborations and recent peer‑reviewed publications.
• Presentation of research at national and international education conferences.
• National Research Foundation (NRF) rating appropriate for Associate Professor level.
• Deep knowledge of South African education policies.
• Experience or knowledge of technology‑aided language education.
