Assistant Resident Engineer – Bridge Construction

About the role

We are seeking two Assistant Resident Engineers to support the construction supervision of one of South Africa's largest bridge projects at the Mtentu River Bridge site. Reporting to the Resident Engineer and Chief Resident Engineer, you will provide structural bridge expertise and technical assistance throughout the contract lifecycle.

Key responsibilities

• Manage on‑site technical aspects of bridge erection, including geometric control of piers and decks.
• Liaise with designers to resolve engineering queries and evaluate method statements.
• Coordinate with the Contractor on technical matters and supervise site resources.
• Apply the firm’s Quality Management System, monitor work quality and production processes.
• Track programme progress and contract budgets from a technical perspective.
• Prepare quantities, payment certificates, variation orders and close‑out reports.

Required profile

• BSc Engineering or B. Engineering Degree.
• 2–12 years of structural design and/or construction supervision experience.
• Registered Professional Engineer (or pending registration) with the Engineering Council of South Africa or equivalent.
• Fluent in English.
