Underground Mechanical Engineering Supervisor

About the role

The Underground Mechanical Engineering Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all mechanical activities within an underground mining environment. This role ensures equipment reliability, safety compliance, and efficient execution of maintenance and project tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Review shift communication logs, allocate materials based on the BOM, and verify statutory records.
• Manage project controls, cost estimates, quantity take‑offs and manpower planning for proposals and change orders.
• Analyse reports, drawings and test data to plan and design work, and coordinate day‑to‑day mechanical activities.
• Prepare daily and weekly operational reports, investigate incidents, and maintain open communication with teams.
• Schedule and oversee planned maintenance, decide on maintenance types, and support subordinates through coaching and inspections.
• Conduct task analyses, baseline and issue‑based risk assessments, and lead investigations of workplace incidents.
• Build and maintain stakeholder relationships, negotiate with service providers, and ensure environmental compliance.
• Set budgeting parameters, approve operational expenditures, monitor budget variances, and drive cost‑saving initiatives.

Required profile

• National N2 Certificate or higher with a mechanical background.
• Valid Artisan Trade Certificate (Section 13 or 26D) with proof of a formal learnership programme.
• Mechanical Foreman’s Certificate of Competence or ability to obtain it within 12‑24 months.
• 3‑5 years of underground mining experience.
• Medically fit for the specific business area and clear security screening record.
• Valid driver’s licence where applicable.
