About the role
The Municipality of eThekwini is seeking a Specialist Ecologist to support biodiversity planning and the implementation of its Environmental Services Management Plan. The role involves working with internal teams and external stakeholders to develop, monitor and deliver sustainable environmental initiatives across Durban.
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to the preparation and implementation of the eThekwini Environmental Services Management Plan (EESMP) and an Environmental Management System (EMS).
- Liaise with stakeholders and officials on open‑space planning, natural‑resource conservation and management matters.
- Investigate queries related to the EESMP and biodiversity issues, and provide input to development applications.
- Oversee the preparation of environmental plans for specific areas, manage project implementation and direct junior technical staff and consultants.
- Identify strategic research projects, develop budgets and action plans, and develop sustainable development indicators.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) in Biological, Ecological or Conservation Sciences or a related field.
- Registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Natural Scientist.
- Valid motor vehicle driving licence.
- Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in ecology or biodiversity planning.
