Senior / Mid Android Developer – Mobile eCommerce

About the role

Mr D, a division of the Takealot Group, is looking for talented Senior and Mid‑level Android Engineers to build and maintain its flagship mobile eCommerce and food‑delivery application used by millions of South African customers.

Key responsibilities

• Own the design, development and testing of a high‑performance Android app using Java/Kotlin.
• Implement and optimise network communication with RESTful JSON APIs.
• Ensure app stability, security and performance through monitoring and profiling.
• Collaborate daily with product, design, QA and backend teams in an Agile environment.
• Publish releases to the Google Play Store and support post‑release maintenance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 3‑5 years of native Android development experience (mid‑level) or 5+ years with team‑lead experience (senior).
• Strong understanding of Android architecture, activity/fragment lifecycles and asynchronous processing.
• Ability to work independently, manage workload and contribute to a fast‑moving product team.

Required skills

• Java and Kotlin programming.
• Jetpack Compose and modern Android architecture components.
• RESTful API integration (JSON).
• Version control with Git, issue tracking with Jira and documentation in Confluence.
• Agile development practices.
• Familiarity with Figma, Photoshop, Google Maps, Firebase and Braze.
