Resident Engineer – Construction and Pavements

About the role

The Resident Engineer will act as the on‑site authority for a SANRAL Community Development Contract, ensuring that construction works are delivered to the required quality, schedule and budget. Reporting to the Section Manager and Contract Engineer, you will coordinate between designers, contractors and clients while maintaining SMEC’s quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Administer the contract and serve as Resident Engineer for the SANRAL Community Development project.
• Review construction drawings and manage contractor queries through proper communication channels.
• Inspect works and test results to enforce quality control.
• Prepare and update cost estimates to completion.
• Maintain site administration records in line with SMEC’s Quality Management System and Construction Manual.
• Take minutes at technical and site meetings and produce monthly progress reports.
• Liaise with clients and contractors, manage site supervision resources, and monitor programme and budget performance.
• Handle claims and contractual issues.

Required profile

• BSc/B.Ing/BTech (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering, registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
• Minimum 10 years of experience in road and construction projects, including at least 5 years as a Resident Engineer.
• Extensive knowledge of major conditions of contract and contractual issue management.
• Fluent in spoken and written English.
• Based in Griekwastad/Kimberley, South Africa.
