CSSD Technician – Sterilisation Specialist

About the role

The Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) Technician is responsible for cleaning, preparing, packing and sterilising instruments, linen and consumables for theatre and other hospital departments. The role ensures that all surgical instruments are processed according to strict sterilisation procedures and that the CSSD environment remains safe and compliant.

Key responsibilities

• Participate actively in a team to achieve daily CSSD goals.
• Maintain cleanliness of the CSSD and decontamination areas.
• Check that all sterilising equipment is operational and service records are up‑to‑date.
• Perform the Bowie‑Dick test daily with the first autoclave load.
• Conduct the Heat‑resistant spore (A‑test) daily for autoclave and hot‑air oven.
• Wash and care for instruments following correct procedures.
• Prepare sterile instrument packs for scheduled theatre lists and emergencies.
• Operate autoclaves, hot‑air ovens and related equipment to sterilise packs, instruments and basins.
• Document all procedures accurately and report any abnormalities.
• Maintain stock control, waste management and a safe working environment.

Required profile

• Grade 12 or equivalent (NQF Level 4) qualification.
• Certificate of completion of CSSD training.
• Minimum of 2 years experience in a hospital CSSD environment.
• Knowledge of cleaning and disinfection processes, infection control and sterile set storage.
• Understanding of safety hazards in CSSD and theatre settings.

Required skills
