Clinical Mentor – Contraceptive Introduction (Free State)

About the role

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is seeking a Clinical Mentor to support the rollout of sub‑cutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA‑SC) at selected learning sites in the Free State. The mentor will work with nurses, pharmacists and community health workers to ensure safe and effective delivery of this new contraceptive option.

Key responsibilities

• Provide on‑site and off‑site training to nurses, pharmacists, lay community health workers, health promoters, NGOs and CBOs on screening, dispensing and administering DMPA‑SC and other contraceptives.
• Identify service delivery points within clinics to integrate sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and HIV services.
• Engage stakeholders at community, facility and district levels to promote contraceptive choice and self‑care options.
• Collect and submit training registers, assessments and evaluations to the Zenzele team.
• Offer ongoing mentorship and coaching to maintain competency and quality of service.

Required profile

• Qualified Medical Officer or Professional Nurse with experience in public‑health or reproductive health services.
• Familiarity with South African Department of Health protocols and contraceptive programmes.
• Strong communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.

Required skills

• Training design and delivery for clinical and non‑clinical staff.
• Knowledge of DMPA‑SC administration and self‑injection techniques.
• Ability to assess training needs and evaluate competency.
